NAMBAWAN Spain SLU (NAMBAWAN”), a fully owned subsidiary of NAMBAWAN Biotech GmbH, has entered into an exclusive license agreement with NOMAD Bioscience GmbH (“NOMAD”). As a result of the agreement, NAMBAWAN receives an exclusive, fully paid up and irreversible commercial license to all NOMAD’s products in the area of sweet and taste modifying proteins including Thaumatins and Brazzeins. Thaumatin II is a natural noncaloric high intensity sweetener developed at NOMAD that is being industrialized by NAMBAWAN as its first product under the trademark Thauma™. Brazzein is another protein sweetener currently in advanced stages of development.

Thaumatins are intensely sweet-tasting protein mixtures (consisting mainly of Thaumatin I and Thaumatin II), up to 13,000 times sweeter than sucrose on a weight basis. Thaumatin mixtures purified from its natural source plant Thaumatococcus received regulatory approvals as sweetener or taste modifier decades ago, and they are on the market in US, EU, Japan and other countries mostly as taste modifiers; however, the wide use of these niche products is limited because of low and unreliable supply of natural plant raw material resulting in high price of the product, and because the microbial fermentation, alternative production method for recombinant Thaumatins, is not competitive in this case.

Thaumatin II is the NAMBAWAN’s lead product candidate with new superior taste attributes; it aims to reduce sugar and eliminate artificial sweeteners in food products, and it can be efficiently produced in plant seed thus assuring an unlimited substance supply at commercially competitive production costs. NOMAD has earlier received its regulatory GRAS clearances for Thaumatin II and other Thaumatins in USA.

Separately, NAMBAWAN has also signed a Research and Development contract that secures broad support by NOMAD of multiple research areas required for the development of Thaumatin and Brazzein products such as laboratory and pilot scale protein purification of Thaumatin II from seed, analytical assays for product certification, production and characterization of pilot batches of Thaumatin II, filing necessary regulatory permits and prosecuting NAMBAWAN’s patents and trademarks.
