Thauma™ is a natural, non-caloric, plant-made sweetener and taste-modifying protein: Thaumatin II.
It’s:
Thauma™ is not just a sweetener—it’s a multifunctional flavour modifier that improves taste, masks off-notes, and enhances other sensory elements like sourness and saltiness.
Safety & Proven Track Record
Thaumatin proteins were first used by African Indigenous Peoples centuries ago via the native katemfe fruit. Since their purification and commercialization over 50 years ago, Thaumatins have been approved for use in the U.S., EU, and other markets—with a flawless safety record.
Thauma™ is produced in plant biofactories in Extremadura, Spain, via partnerships with Nomad Bioscience, Olivos de Badajoz, CTAEX, and Madeinplant (Valencia).
Thauma™ is the world’s sweetest natural protein sweetener with superior flavour performance and cost efficiency in use.
Our modern diet is overloaded with sugar and artificial sweeteners—an unsustainable trend fueling obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and more. Leading health authorities urge cutting sugar intake by up to 50% to reach medically recommended levels, and governments are implementing measures to incentivize sugar reduction such as increased tax burden on sugar-containing food etc. Thauma™ is a revolutionary new tool to achieve that—naturally—without compromising on taste.
Today, over 31 million hectares (78 million acres) of land are used to grow sugarcane and sugar beets—roughly the size of Germany. In the U.S., an additional 2.5 million hectares (6.25 million acres) grow corn for corn syrup. Thauma™ can deliver the same sweetness using less than 10% of that land, dramatically reducing the environmental footprint of sweeteners.
NAMBAWAN holds an exclusive commercial license for sweet and taste-modifying proteins, including Thaumatin II and Brazzein III, from Nomad Biotech GmbH, Germany. The intellectual property includes patent applications for sweetener compositions involving Thaumatin II combined with sucrose, stevia (Reb M and Reb A), monk fruit mogroside Mog V, and Brazzein. These patents are being pursued globally, with additional patent applications in progress.
Our Thaumatin II product holds GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) approval in the U.S., with multiple approvals from the FDA, FEMA, and GRAS Expert Panel. We are actively expanding approval efforts for Thaumatin II in other countries. Additionally, NAMBAWAN has secured the Thauma™ trademark for its Thaumatin II product in the EU and UK, with pending applications in other important markets. «Thauma» is derived from the Ancient Greek word (θαύμα), meaning «wonder» or «miracle.»
