NAMBAWAN Spain SLU (“NAMBAWAN”) is pleased to announce that the Company has taken over, renewed and extended the development and production agreements with OLIVOS DE BADAJOZ SLU (“OdB”), Pueblonuevo del Guadiana, Extremadura, CENTRO TECNOLOGICO NACIONAL AGROALIMENTARIO EXTREMADURA (“CTAEX”), Badajoz, Extremadura, and MADEINPLANT SL, Valencia. During 2020-23, these activities on behalf of NAMBAWAN were conducted by NOMAD Bioscience GmbH (“NOMAD”), its exclusive licensor in the area of sweet and taste modifying proteins and continuing R&D partner.

In 2021, CTAEX and TABACOEX conducted first open field and greenhouse trials with NOMAD plant hosts expressing Thaumatin II, a natural high-intensity non-caloric sweetener of plant origin. In 2022, OLIVOS DE BADAJOZ joined the list of the collaborators. This year, the pilot scale activities will be conducted on larger areas both in greenhouse and open field under the required biosecurity notifications and permits. The plant biomass will then be transported to processing facilities to purify quantities of several products needed for NAMBAWAN’s work with potential buyers and for pre- and clinical studies.

NAMBAWAN has also signed an Agreement with the Spanish company MADEINPLANT, Valencia to continue support NAMBAWAN’s ongoing technical, regulatory and development efforts in Spain. Previously, MADEINPLANT has already helped to secure regulatory permits and to file notifications needed for conducting open field and greenhouse trials in 2021-23. The Company is also working with NAMBAWAN towards securing necessary regulatory permits for conducting its agricultural activities beyond 2024.

The successful results of this season’s trials will pave the way to commercial scale activities as soon as 2025. NOMAD’s Thaumatin II has received GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status in USA (FDA GRN 738, GRN 910 and GRN920 and FEMA GRAS 5010); it thus can be marketed there commercially as a taste modifier or high intensity non-caloric sweetener.
