NAMBAWAN Spain SLU (NAMBAWAN), Badajoz, Spain, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nambawan Biotech, Germany, which is a spin-off of Nomad Bioscience GmbH (NOMAD), Munich, Germany; the Company has its registered office in Badajoz, Spain. NAMBAWAN has exclusively in-licensed Nomad’s technology and pipeline of natural high intensity sweetener and taste modifying proteins that have the capability to partially substitute sugar and other artificial and natural sweeteners, a market that is worth >USD 150 billion per year.
The lead product candidate is a recombinant version of the natural non-caloric high intensity sweetener protein, Thaumatin II. The product, trademarked Thaûma™, has already obtained GRAS status from FDA and FEMA and is expected to achieve a deep market penetration in three different markets: taste modifier, sugar substitute and natural/artificial sweetener substitute, thanks to its better taste profile, ecological superiority, supply volumes, product supply security and enhanced food product safety. Thaûma™ is expected to be profitable and able to compete with other taste modifiers, sugar and natural sweeteners from the start, with an excellent probability of becoming price competitive against artificial sweeteners in future.
The Company expects to achieve breakeven in 2026 and profitability the year after, and to bring the company to the industrial stage. NAMBAWAN plans to build production of Thaûma™ in the Extremadura region of Spain. Production capacity will reach 25 ton per year quickly to satisfy potential demand.
NAMBAWAN is also developing recombinant protein Brazzein III, another natural non-caloric high intensity sweetener of interest to the sweetener industry. Brazzein III could reach the market within 3 years, broadening NAMBAWAN’s range of food additives.
